Concerns over ground instability have prompted the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to deploy a team of geologists to the Nakuru Eveready roundabout. The move comes after visible cracks and subsurface shifts were recently detected along the busy Nakuru–Marigat Road, sparking fears over the safety of motorists and the long-term stability of the corridor.
The geologists have been tasked with carrying out a comprehensive diagnostic study over a ten-day period. Their findings will guide KeNHA’s engineering team in formulating durable solutions to address the underlying geological challenges. Preliminary repair works have already been undertaken to restore traffic flow, but experts believe long-term measures will depend on a deeper understanding of the soil and ground movement in the affected area.
Officials have stressed that the authority will continue to closely monitor the site while providing regular updates to the public. In the meantime, motorists have been urged to exercise caution when approaching the roundabout. Warning signs and temporary traffic management measures remain in place, as the risk of recurring ground shifts has not been ruled out.
The issue gained urgency earlier this month when part of the Nakuru–Eldoret highway was temporarily closed after a sinkhole suddenly formed near the roundabout. The incident caused traffic diversions and raised questions among residents and road users about the stability of one of Kenya’s most important transport corridors. Although the road was reopened after emergency repairs, experts warned that permanent solutions would require detailed technical investigations.
The upcoming geological report is expected to outline the scale of the problem, identify possible causes, and recommend long-term engineering interventions. KeNHA has emphasized that collaboration with geologists and other relevant agencies will be key to ensuring the safety of the road and preventing further disruptions.
For now, the authority has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard motorists. With the investigation underway, road users are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic guidance around the Eveready roundabout until permanent solutions are implemented.
