The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was temporarily closed on Thursday morning following the arrival of the remains of the late Rt Hon. Raila Odinga. In a statement, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced that operations were halted due to an ongoing security situation as thousands of mourners gathered at the airport to pay their respects.
The plane carrying Odinga’s body touched down at 9:30 a.m., with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) leading the reception. The body is expected to be transported to Lee Funeral Home under tight security once clearance is completed.
The unprecedented turnout has caused significant traffic disruption around the airport, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area. Odinga’s death has plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the political divide as preparations for a state funeral continue.
