The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued a travel advisory for passengers using Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport this Sunday, as Nairobi braces for major road closures due to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
The CHAN tournament, one of Africa’s premier football competitions, is expected to draw thousands of fans to Nairobi, with the city hosting several high-profile matches. As a result, multiple roads in and around the capital will be fully or partially closed to facilitate the movement of teams, officials, and fans, as well as to enhance security during the event.
Among the affected routes is Aerodrome Road, which will be fully closed from the Madaraka roundabout to the Bunyala roundabout. Additionally, one side of Lang’ata Road will be closed between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts. Mombasa Road will also face partial closure, with one lane shut from the Lusaka to Bunyala roundabout.
In response to the expected disruptions, KAA has advised travelers flying through JKIA and Wilson Airport to check their flight schedules in advance and allow extra time for travel. “Passengers are strongly urged to allow for prolonged travel times to ensure timely arrival at JKIA or Wilson Airport,” KAA stated.
To avoid affected areas, motorists heading to the CBD are encouraged to use Mombasa Road via Likoni-Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass. Those on Lang’ata Road can reroute via Raila Odinga Road or Muthio Road.
For travelers heading from the CBD towards Thika, Ruiru, Juja, or Thika Road, KAA recommends Limuru Road or Kiambu Road. Conversely, those coming from Thika Road into the city are advised to use the Eastern Bypass or alternative routes such as Kiambu and Limuru Roads.
KAA has also provided customer support contacts for inquiries. Travelers can call +254 20 661 1000 or +254 20 661 2000, or email customercare@kaa.go.ke for assistance.
The advisory aims to minimize travel disruptions and ensure a smooth experience for both airport passengers and CHAN fans as Nairobi takes center stage in continental football.
