The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of a section of Mombasa Road near Syokimau Railway Station to facilitate the installation of beams for the Syokimau Railway Footbridge. The disruption will take place from midnight on Saturday, July 12, and continue until Sunday, July 13.
In a public notice issued on Saturday, KeNHA stated that the traffic disruption is necessary to safely mount the fabricated footbridge beams across the busy highway. The new pedestrian bridge is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety for commuters and pedestrians in the high-traffic area around Syokimau.
During the closure, motorists traveling past Gateway Mall towards Mlolongo and further to Athi River and Machakos will be affected, as the specified section will not be accessible. Additionally, traffic around key facilities such as Syokimau Railway Station, Teco Mall, and other nearby access points will experience temporary disruptions.
However, KeNHA confirmed that the Nairobi-bound lanes on Mombasa Road will remain open during the exercise. This partial accessibility aims to reduce overall congestion and maintain some level of traffic flow along the busy highway.
KeNHA urged all motorists and road users to exercise caution and patience during the closure period. “We request the cooperation of all road users and encourage them to follow the guidance of police officers and traffic marshals who will be on-site to manage flow and ensure safety,” the agency said in the notice.
The installation of the Syokimau footbridge is part of a broader initiative to improve non-motorized transport infrastructure and enhance pedestrian safety, especially in accident-prone zones along major highways. Once complete, the footbridge will serve thousands of commuters who rely on Syokimau Railway Station daily.
Motorists are advised to plan their travel ahead of time and consider alternative routes to avoid delays. KeNHA also encouraged the use of public transport where feasible to ease pressure on the road during the brief closure period.
This development marks yet another step in KeNHA’s continued efforts to modernize and improve Kenya’s road network, balancing infrastructure expansion with safety for all users.
