Motorists travelling on two critical highways linking Nairobi to western Kenya will experience temporary traffic interruptions from Thursday through Sunday, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced. The disruptions will affect the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit (A8) Road and the Nairobi-Maai Mahiu-Naivasha (A8 South) Road.
KeNHA said the brief stoppages are necessary to facilitate a series of road improvement surveys aimed at enhancing infrastructure and traffic management. The surveys include Axle Load Surveys, Origin-Destination Surveys, Camera-Based Classified Cross-Sectional Surveys, and counts of turning movements.
Motorists may be stopped briefly to provide journey details during the data-gathering process. KeNHA has urged road users to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed at designated survey points to ensure minimal disruption and smooth operations.
The Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit highway is a key transport corridor and part of the Northern Corridor and Trans-African Highway network, facilitating regional trade between Kenya and neighbouring countries. It is currently undergoing a major upgrade under the government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme. The plan seeks to transform the existing road from Rironi to Mau Summit into a modern dual carriageway.
The expansion aims to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and enhance transport efficiency. It has attracted significant private sector interest. Multiplex Partners Company Limited has recently submitted a bid to join China Road and Bridge Corporation—partnering with the National Social Security Fund—and Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International Engineering Ltd., both of which have already advanced to the project development phase.
These infrastructure upgrades align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the Medium-Term Plan IV, which prioritise connectivity, safety, and economic growth. The projects are expected to spur job creation, support local businesses, and ease mobility across the corridor.
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, anticipate possible delays, and use alternative routes where advised during the survey period. KeNHA remains committed to improving road infrastructure to support national and regional development.
