Motorists using the busy Gitaru Interchange in Nairobi are set to experience significant traffic disruptions, following a traffic advisory issued by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). The agency has announced that a section of the interchange will remain closed until Monday, August 11, 2025, to allow for critical reconstruction works.
The closure specifically affects the Southwestern loop that connects the A8 Road (Waiyaki Way) to the Southern Bypass at the intersection with the Western Bypass. According to KeNHA, the ongoing works include the reconstruction of ramps, loops, and slip roads an essential upgrade to improve traffic flow and road safety in the area.
As part of the traffic management plan, KeNHA has provided several diversions to minimize inconvenience to road users. Vehicles traveling from the A8 towards the Southern Bypass are being redirected through the E1507 Kikuyu-Link Road, accessible at the Sigona Golf Club junction.
Motorists heading from Nakuru toward the Southern Bypass have been advised to use the newly constructed Southeastern loop. Alternatively, they may utilize a temporary diversion located along the Southern Bypass median.
For those traveling from the Western Bypass intending to join Waiyaki Way (A8), KeNHA has directed them to use the Muguku Interchange. From there, they will proceed via the Kikuyu-Link Road and rejoin A8 at the Sigona Golf Club junction.
KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndungu has called on all road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to the traffic control measures in place. “KeNHA advises motorists to follow the traffic management plan, project road signs, and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site,” he said.
While acknowledging the temporary inconvenience, the agency emphasized that the ongoing upgrades are aimed at long-term improvement of the interchange’s capacity and efficiency.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow for extra travel time during this period. KeNHA has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the works within the stipulated timeline.
