The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced plans to acquire additional land for the ongoing dualling of the Mombasa-Mariakani Road (A109), as part of efforts to expand the crucial transport corridor linking Mombasa to the interior of Kenya. The announcement was made through a public notice detailing the land parcels affected, revisions to previous listings, and a schedule for compensation hearings.
Among the notable changes is the removal of four previously listed parcels of land, namely MN/V/2028, MN/V/412R, MN/V/3070, and MN/V/1884, which collectively cover approximately 13 acres. This revision reflects an update in KeNHA’s acquisition strategy, perhaps due to changes in engineering designs or successful negotiations with landowners.
In addition to these deletions, four more parcels have had their acquisition status modified. These are MN/V/2856, MN/V/2857, MN/V/2804, and MN/V/2858, which together total about 7.5 acres. The notice also highlights that five other parcels MN/VI/4786 (MN/VI/2842/2/4), MN/VI/4786 (MN/VI/2842/2/2), MN/V/2689, MN/V/2379, and MN/V/2626 have undergone corrections, either in their descriptions or documentation, affecting approximately 5.7 acres.
Those with interests in the affected properties are invited to inspect the plans and documentation relating to the land. These are available for viewing at the Ministry of Lands headquarters at Ardhi House in Nairobi and at the National Land Commission’s (NLC) County Coordinator’s Office in Mombasa. Interested individuals can visit these offices during regular working hours to review the proposed acquisitions and prepare for the next steps in the compensation process.
In line with the legal process for land acquisition for public projects, hearings for claims relating to compensation will be conducted later in May at designated local offices. The schedule for these hearings has been outlined to facilitate participation by affected parties. On Tuesday, May 20, from 10:00 am, hearings for claims involving title numbers MN/VI/4786 (MN/VI/2842/2/4) and MN/VI/4786 (MN/VI/2842/2/2) will be held at the Changamwe Chief’s Office.
Subsequently, on Wednesday, May 21, also from 10:00 am, a hearing concerning land title MN/V/2379 is scheduled at the Miritini Chief’s Office. The final session in this series will be conducted on Thursday, May 22, at 10:00 am at the Rabai Chief’s Office. This hearing will cover claims related to titles MN/V/2856, MN/V/2857, MN/V/2804, MN/V/2858, MN/V/2689, and MN/V/2626.
All affected individuals or their legal representatives are advised to submit their compensation claims in writing to the National Land Commission before the inquiry dates. Each submission must include a copy of the individual’s national identity card (ID), Personal Identification Number (PIN), proof of land ownership, and bank account details. Submissions can be made to the NLC offices at Ardhi House, 3rd Floor, Room 305 in Nairobi or at the Mombasa County office.
This compensation process is a critical step in ensuring that the expansion of the Mombasa–Mariakani road proceeds lawfully and fairly, allowing for the necessary infrastructure development while respecting property rights. The dualling of this road is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance economic connectivity between the port of Mombasa and inland regions.
