The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary closure of a section of Mombasa Road to facilitate essential infrastructure works. The disruption will occur at Naivas JKIA along the Mombasa-bound service lane of the A8 Road. This closure is scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 9:00 pm and will end on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at 10:00 am.
The reason for this planned traffic disruption is to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams that are part of the Syokimau Railway Footbridge project. The installation of these beams is a critical step in the development of the footbridge, which is aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety and easing movement in one of the busiest traffic corridors in the Nairobi metropolitan area.
Motorists and the general public have been advised to expect some inconvenience during the period of closure. However, the Authority has put in place a traffic management plan to minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth flow of vehicles. Road users are urged to adhere to the directions of traffic marshals and police officers who will be stationed at the site to guide and manage traffic during the closure.
KeNHA has emphasized the importance of cooperation from all road users, noting that the temporary closure is necessary to ensure the safe and successful installation of the footbridge beams. The Authority has further assured that every effort will be made to complete the works within the stipulated time frame in order to minimize the impact on travel plans.
As part of its broader mandate, the Authority is responsible for the development, rehabilitation, maintenance, and management of all National Trunk Roads in Kenya. These include roads classified under Class S (Superhighways), Class A (International Trunk Roads), and Class B (National Trunk Roads). The organization plays a key role in maintaining the country’s road infrastructure to meet growing transportation needs and support economic development.
Headquartered in Nairobi, the Authority operates through ten regional offices and three corridor management offices, enabling it to efficiently oversee projects and road maintenance activities across the country. Its responsibilities also extend to the management and installation of weighbridges, which are vital for ensuring road safety and preserving road quality by monitoring vehicle load limits.
In addition to its operational functions, the Authority is recognized for its commitment to quality management. It achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification in July 2013 and later transitioned to ISO 9001:2015 certification in September 2018. These certifications demonstrate the organization’s dedication to upholding high standards in service delivery and operational efficiency.
The temporary closure of the Mombasa-bound service lane near Naivas JKIA is therefore a part of a much larger effort to improve road and pedestrian infrastructure in line with the Authority’s mission. Road users are encouraged to plan ahead, use alternative routes where possible, and remain patient during the brief disruption. By working together with traffic authorities and observing the provided guidelines, the public can contribute to a safe and efficient implementation of this important project.
This infrastructure improvement is expected to significantly enhance pedestrian access and safety in the area once completed, ultimately contributing to a more integrated and secure transport network for all users.
