Kenya Airways (KQ) has released the emotional onboard tribute delivered during flight KQ203, which transported the body of the late Raila Amolo Odinga from India to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday morning, October 16.
In a rare and symbolic gesture, the national carrier temporarily renamed the aircraft RAO001—a nod to Raila’s initials and his monumental contributions to Kenya’s political and social history.
The tribute, narrated by Captain Saviemaria Ondego, celebrated Raila as a “visionary leader and Pan-Africanist” whose influence transcended national borders. The captain’s words highlighted Raila’s enduring dedication to peace, democracy, and African unity, describing him as a source of inspiration for generations across the continent.
Kenya Airways also acknowledged the former Prime Minister’s steadfast belief in the national airline, noting how his advocacy and leadership played a crucial role in strengthening Kenya’s aviation sector. “His legacy will inspire us as we pursue greatness and unity in propelling Africa’s prosperity,” the tribute read.
The airline extended its condolences to Mama Ida Odinga, the Odinga family, friends, and the entire nation, mourning the loss of a leader who “will always hold a special place in our hearts.”
Raila, who passed away at the age of 80 after collapsing in Kochi, India, had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.
A State funeral service was held on Friday at Nyayo Stadium, attended by senior government officials and international dignitaries. On Saturday, his body arrived in Kisumu for public viewing at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mamboleo, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
The private burial of the former Prime Minister is scheduled for Sunday at his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County, marking the final farewell to one of Kenya’s most influential and respected leaders.
