Kenya Railways has announced an additional Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Madaraka Express train to accommodate the recent surge in passenger demand. The extra service will operate on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, 2025, offering more travel options between Mombasa and Nairobi.
According to a notice issued by the corporation, the first train will depart Mombasa for Nairobi on Friday at 9:45am, arriving in Voi at 11:21am. After a short five-minute stop, it will continue to Nairobi, reaching the capital at 3:48pm. The return journey from Nairobi to Mombasa is scheduled for Saturday, departing at 9:45am, arriving in Voi at 1:35pm, and finally reaching Mombasa at 3:36pm after another brief stop.
Kenya Railways is urging passengers to book their tickets early to avoid missing out on the additional service. Tickets can be purchased online via www.metickets.krc.co.ke, through USSD by dialing *639#, or at any SGR station across the country.
The move comes as Kenyans prepare for the festive season, a period traditionally associated with increased travel to the coast. SGR Managing Director Philip Mainga recently confirmed that all premium class trains are fully booked until February 2026, highlighting the high demand for this service.
Mainga also indicated that Kenya Railways plans to order more coaches and equipment to meet the growing demand, particularly for the premium class. “The demand for this premium class is high, so we are now going to order more coaches and equipment to ensure that everyone is accommodated. And for your information, we are booked until February,” he said during a press briefing in October.
The additional Madaraka Express service is part of Kenya Railways’ efforts to enhance passenger experience and reduce travel congestion during peak periods. Travelers planning trips to the coast are advised to secure their seats early to avoid disappointment.
