Kenya has achieved a major milestone in its maritime and tourism sectors after welcoming the first-ever cruise ship to Shimoni Port in Kwale County. The luxury expedition vessel, SH Diana, operated by Swan Hellenic Expeditions, docked with 500 passengers and crew aboard signalling a new era for the country’s southern coastline.
According to the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), the visitors will explore various attractions along the coast, including snorkelling, marine excursions, and tours of Kwale’s national parks. The landmark docking not only enhances Kenya’s image as a cruise tourism destination but also promises significant economic benefits for local communities.
About the SH Diana
Built at the Helsinki Shipyard in Finland and launched in 2023, the 125-metre-long SH Diana is the largest and most advanced ship in Swan Hellenic’s fleet. The vessel accommodates 192 guests in 96 staterooms and suites, many of which feature private balconies. It is supported by a dedicated crew of 140 staff, ensuring a world-class experience.
The ship boasts premium facilities including a spa, sauna, gym, heated outdoor pool, observation lounge, and expedition laboratory. Designed with a Polar Class 6 ice-strengthened hull and hybrid-ready diesel-electric propulsion system, SH Diana combines comfort, innovation, and sustainability allowing it to navigate both polar and tropical waters safely while reducing environmental impact.
A Boost for Coastal Tourism
SH Diana’s visit to Shimoni marks a strategic step in positioning Kenya’s South Coast as a luxury cruise destination. The ship has previously called at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu, and continued visits of this kind could see Kenya emerge as a premier cruise tourism hub in the Western Indian Ocean, linking routes to Zanzibar, Pemba, and Madagascar.
