The Kenyan Embassy in Mozambique has issued a stern warning to Kenyan citizens travelling to the southern African nation, urging them to strictly observe the 90-day visa-free stay period.
In a notice released on Sunday night, the embassy expressed concern over the increasing number of Kenyans overstaying their permitted duration in Mozambique, contrary to the Agreement on Exemption from Visa Requirements for Holders of Ordinary Passports, signed between the two nations in November 2018.
“The Kenya High Commission in Maputo has observed an increase in cases of Kenyan nationals overstaying in Mozambique, contrary to the agreement between the Republic of Kenya and the Republic of Mozambique,” the statement read. “The High Commission therefore urges all Kenyans travelling to Mozambique to strictly comply with the permitted duration of stay to avoid inconveniences, fines, or other sanctions.”
Under Mozambique’s new immigration laws, which took effect in January 2023, foreigners who exceed their allowed stay risk facing stiff penalties. These include hefty fines, detention, and even entry bans of up to 10 years in severe cases.
The visa-free agreement between Kenya and Mozambique was established to promote trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. It allows holders of ordinary passports from either country to enter and stay for up to 90 days without a visa.
The embassy’s advisory comes just three months after Kenya lifted Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) requirements for nearly all African countries, a move aimed at fostering continental unity and boosting tourism. Only Somalia and Libya remain excluded due to security concerns.
Kenya’s decision now allows citizens from 52 African nations to enter the country without prior authorisation, with East African Community (EAC) citizens enjoying stays of up to 180 days.
The High Commission’s warning serves as a reminder for Kenyans to respect host country regulations to maintain the benefits of visa-free travel agreements.
