The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of the Ngong–Suswa Road to facilitate major construction work. This development, which was confirmed by a public notice from the agency, will affect a stretch between Km 0+000 (Matonyok) and Km 2+600 (Junction to KIBHT). The closure is part of ongoing efforts to improve the road and address safety concerns.
The specific closure details are as follows: the segment from Km 1+400 (Ngere Road Junction) to Km 2+600 (Junction to KIBHT) will remain closed from May 12 to May 20, 2025. Meanwhile, the section from Km 0+000 (Matonyok) to Km 1+400 (Ngere Road Junction) will be closed for a more extended period, from May 12 to June 11, 2025. These closures are necessary to allow contractors to complete major construction works under challenging site conditions.
According to the notice, previous temporary diversions had proven inadequate for managing traffic flow, especially during the rainy season. The diverted routes had also raised safety concerns due to their inability to handle the volume of traffic effectively, making the closure of sections of the road unavoidable. To mitigate the disruption, motorists are advised to use alternative routes, including Lemiso Road, Maragara Road, and Kibiko.
KeRRA has also urged drivers to follow the guidance of traffic marshals and police officers who will be stationed along the affected routes. The agency has expressed its regret for the inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s cooperation during the construction process. The roadwork is part of a broader initiative to improve the region’s infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel in the future.
Road closures are typically implemented for various reasons, including safety, emergency responses, and construction projects. In this case, the closure aims to enhance the road’s capacity, reduce accidents, and facilitate better flow of traffic in the long term. In addition to this closure, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had previously announced a similar temporary closure on the Mombasa Road near Katani Road Junction. From April 19 to July 20, 2025, traffic disruptions were expected along the Mombasa-bound lanes to allow for the installation of fabricated footbridge beams. This initiative is also part of ongoing infrastructure improvement projects aimed at enhancing road safety and accessibility.
For both closures, KeNHA and KeRRA have put in place traffic management plans to minimize inconvenience. These measures include the deployment of police officers and traffic marshals to direct traffic and ensure smooth operations. Drivers are encouraged to cooperate fully with these officers and follow the alternative routes to avoid delays and ensure safety for everyone on the road.
Construction projects such as these are essential for improving infrastructure, although they often come with temporary disruptions. Roadworks, weather-related hazards, accidents, and public events are common causes for road closures. While these measures are inconvenient in the short term, they are vital for the long-term development of the country’s road network, ensuring that roads are safer, more durable, and able to accommodate growing traffic demands. The authorities are committed to completing the ongoing works as efficiently as possible and urge the public to remain patient during this period of improvement.
With these ongoing construction efforts, the authorities hope to enhance not only road safety but also the overall driving experience for all road users. As work progresses, regular updates are expected to keep the public informed about any further developments or changes to the road closure schedule.
