The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has issued a public notice announcing the temporary closure of key sections of the Ngong–Suswa Road to facilitate major construction works. The affected stretch runs from Km 0+000 at Matonyok to Km 2+600 at the junction to the Kenya Institute of Business and Hospitality Training (KIBHT).
According to the notice released on Wednesday, the closure will take place in two phases. The first segment, from Km 1+400 (Ngere Road Junction) to Km 2+600 (KIBHT Junction), will be closed from May 12 to May 20, 2025. The second segment, stretching from Km 0+000 (Matonyok) to Km 1+400 (Ngere Road Junction), will remain closed for a longer period May 12 to June 11, 2025.
KeRRA emphasized that the closure is necessary to allow the contractor to carry out intensive construction activities under constrained site conditions. The authority also noted that previously used temporary diversions had become inadequate, especially during the rainy season, posing safety risks to motorists and construction crews alike.
Motorists and other road users are advised to use alternative routes during this period, including Lemiso Road, Maragara Road, and Kibiko. KeRRA further urged drivers to follow the instructions of traffic marshals and police officers who will be deployed on site to manage the situation and ensure smooth traffic flow.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your cooperation as we work to improve this vital infrastructure,” the statement read.
Road closures of this nature are common and are typically undertaken for safety, maintenance, or emergency-related reasons. Construction work, severe weather conditions, public events, or accidents can all necessitate temporary road shutdowns.
In a related development, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) recently announced a three-month closure of a section of Mombasa Road near Katani Road Junction, effective from April 19 to July 20, 2025, to allow the installation of footbridge beams. Motorists are urged to adhere to traffic management plans and cooperate with authorities at all times.
