The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a 17-day partial closure of Likoni Road in Nairobi, scheduled from October 15 to October 31, 2025. The closure, which will affect a section between the BAT Industries area and the Jogoo Road Junction, is part of ongoing urban road improvement efforts aimed at enhancing mobility across one of the city’s busiest industrial corridors.
The rehabilitation works will focus on road surface restoration and drainage improvements, which are expected to significantly improve traffic flow and reduce congestion once completed. KURA has advised motorists to plan their travels in advance, as the closure is likely to cause significant delays. Alternative routes have been recommended to help ease traffic congestion during the closure period.
Motorists can use Lunga Lunga and Outer Ring Roads for heavy vehicles, while light traffic can take Enterprise and Lusaka Roads to avoid the affected section of Likoni Road. The authority has deployed traffic officers and marshals to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow, especially during peak hours.
Likoni Road serves as a critical route for vehicles accessing the Industrial Area, City Stadium, and Jogoo Road, making it a major transportation corridor for both commercial and industrial traffic. With the closure, KURA aims to modernize the road to accommodate increased traffic and enhance overall traffic movement, particularly on the eastern side of Nairobi.
In addition to the Likoni Road closure, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has also announced a two-month partial closure of a section of Thika Road to facilitate the construction of a new pedestrian bridge. The closure, which will begin on October 20, 2025, is expected to affect traffic flow on both Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes at the Kihunguro area. The project is expected to enhance pedestrian safety and reduce accidents along the busy Thika Superhighway.
Both closures are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and ensure safer and more efficient transport networks in Nairobi.
