The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary two-day closure of Jamuhuri Road to facilitate ongoing infrastructure works linked to the Talanta Sports City Project at the Jamuhuri Sports Grounds in Nairobi. The road will be closed from 8pm on Friday, October 10, to 11pm on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
According to KURA, the closure is necessary to allow the construction of critical drainage and sewerage systems that are part of the wider Talanta Sports City infrastructure network. These works aim to address persistent flooding issues along Ngong Road and the Jamuhuri area, which have often caused disruptions and damage to existing infrastructure.
During the closure, motorists have been advised to use Sanctuary Road and Kibera Drive as alternative routes. KURA has assured Nairobi residents that traffic marshals will be deployed along affected routes to manage movement and minimize congestion. The Authority has also urged motorists to plan their travel in advance and adhere to road signage throughout the closure period.
The drainage and sewerage works are designed to integrate with the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company’s (NCWSC) network. This integration will enhance stormwater management and waste discharge efficiency within the Ngong Road–Dagoretti–Kibera corridor. The initiative forms part of a larger government effort to modernize Nairobi’s sports, road, and utility infrastructure under the Talanta Hela programme, led by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports.
The Talanta Sports City, located near the Nairobi Showground, is envisioned as a world-class sporting and entertainment complex. It will feature a 60,000-capacity stadium primarily dedicated to football and rugby, with adjacent facilities for athletics, training, and creative events. The complex will also include modern amenities such as VIP hospitality areas, media zones, medical and doping control rooms, and advanced floodlighting for night matches.
Construction is being undertaken by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure quality and timely completion. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025 and will incorporate sustainability features such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient lighting to promote environmental responsibility.
