The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the construction of two major viaducts along Kenyatta Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi, aimed at decongesting one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Speaking on Monday, August 11, Benjamin Asin, Assistant Director at KURA’s Directorate of Urban Design, explained that a viaduct is a long, elevated bridge-like structure that raises traffic above a lower area, similar to sections of the Nairobi Expressway.
The first viaduct will stretch from the Integrity Centre to land near the Serena Hotel along Valley Road, while the second will run from the Milimani Law Courts to land near the National Library along Ngong Road. These elevated roadways form part of the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue/Ngong/Nyerere Interchange and the Upper Hill–Haile Selassie Overpass construction works.
According to Asin, the project is designed to streamline traffic flow between the Nairobi Central Business District and Upper Hill. The corridor is a critical link that experiences heavy vehicular movement daily, serving business hubs, government offices, and major institutions.
In addition to the viaducts, KURA is expanding walkways and cycling tracks between the CBD and Upper Hill to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, alongside installing modern streetlights to enhance safety and the visual appeal of the route.
“A viaduct integrates well in an urban environment so that the visual intrusion is minimal,” Asin noted, adding that pedestrian facilities from Valley Road to the CBD are also being upgraded.
The announcement comes as KURA intensifies road rehabilitation works across the capital. Key projects include the Valley Road–Kenyatta Avenue and Ngong Road upgrades.
The authority is also constructing a four-lane flyover at the Ngong Road–Naivasha Road junction near Junction Mall. Scheduled for completion by July 2027, the flyover will feature improved junctions, walkways, and cycling lanes, significantly easing congestion and boosting mobility in the area.
KURA further indicated that it is working to complete other stalled road projects across the country, underscoring its commitment to modernizing Kenya’s urban road network and improving transport efficiency.
These developments are expected to not only cut travel time between key Nairobi districts but also promote safer, more inclusive transport infrastructure for all road users.
