CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo found himself in a heated confrontation with Kibra MP Peter Orero after the legislator’s vehicle was caught flouting traffic rules in Nairobi.
In a 26-second video shared by Madowo on social media, the ODM lawmaker’s car was seen driving on the wrong side of the road. Madowo, who refused to give way, attempted to stop the vehicle, resulting in a tense altercation in the middle of a busy highway.
The journalist narrated, “These people were driving on the wrong side, and so I decided to block them.” The situation escalated when the MP’s driver began insulting Madowo, prompting the journalist to call out the behavior publicly.
Seated in the front passenger seat, MP Orero could be heard intimidating the journalist, challenging him to “report the matter to Ruto.” Unfazed, Madowo fired back, saying, “I will take it to Ruto,” before the MP’s vehicle sped off as the driver continued to hurl insults.
Madowo later remarked online, “Is that spicy passenger your MP? That appears to be a Kenyan lawmaker, Kibra MP Peter Orero, who’s a former high school administrator.”
The incident sparked public outrage, with Kenyans condemning the legislator’s behavior. “From classroom discipline to road chaos, Kibra MP Peter Orero skipped the lesson on leading by example,” one user commented. Another added, “Very unfortunate coming from an elected leader. It’s the reason Parliament has become what it is. Sad.”
According to Kenya’s Traffic Act, driving on the wrong side of the road is an offense punishable by a fine of up to Ksh10,000 or six months in jail or both. If deemed reckless or dangerous, offenders could face penalties of up to Ksh100,000.
Madowo’s bold stance has since reignited calls for accountability among public officials, especially those entrusted with leadership and moral responsibility.
