One person is feared dead after a lorry ferrying alcoholic drinks rammed into a hardware shop along Mutarakwa at Limuru Junction in Kiambu County on the afternoon of Saturday, October 25, 2025.
According to witnesses, the lorry was descending a steep section of the road at high speed when the driver appeared to lose control. The vehicle struck several obstacles before crashing into the hardware shop, trapping one person inside.
Residents described the scene as terrifying. “Mimi nilikuwa nimetulia pale, gari ikashuka, mimi sikujua inaweza kupita hizi mawe. I thought itasimama hapa tu. Vile tunaona kwa movie, leo tumeona live live. Hii barabara iwekwe bumps,” said Kiama Kamau, one of the eyewitnesses.
The impact was so severe that the lorry’s front section was completely embedded in the building, with its rear wheels left hanging mid-air. The crash caused panic among residents and motorists in the busy area, as people rushed to assist with rescue efforts.
Emergency responders and police officers from Limuru Police Station arrived at the scene moments later. The road was temporarily closed to facilitate the recovery of the vehicle and removal of debris from the damaged shop.
Another resident, Patrick Muthenji, suggested that brake failure or excessive speed could have caused the crash. “Hii barabara ni hatari. Magari makubwa ikishuka hapa, lazima waweke bumps ama signage,” he said.
Following the tragic accident, residents are urging authorities to install speed bumps and warning signs along the steep road, which they say has become prone to accidents.
