The wait is almost over for Mombasa residents. On September 17, 2025, President William Ruto will officially commission the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service.
This new service is designed to make commuting between the SGR Mombasa Terminus in Miritini and the Central Business District (CBD) easier, faster, and cheaper.
A New Era for City Travel
The project, which began in 2022, cost Ksh6 billion. It will cover a distance of 17 kilometres and carry up to 4,000 passengers daily.
For years, commuters have struggled with heavy traffic on Mombasa roads. The new rail service aims to cut travel time and reduce congestion.
Key Features of the Service
- Stops at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, and Mombasa Central Station.
- Two flexible commuting options:
- Park and Ride – for those driving to the station.
- Drop and Ride – for passengers being dropped off.
- Safe, reliable, and affordable transport for both residents and visitors.
Linking SGR to the CBD
One of the biggest challenges for Madaraka Express passengers has been accessing the CBD from the SGR terminus. The new service solves this by offering a direct connection.
According to Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, the link train will be a game-changer. “Residents, tourists, and train enthusiasts travelling to Mombasa will be able to use the Link train,” he said.
Government’s Assurance
During an inspection, Transport CS Davis Chirchir confirmed that the rail service will improve daily commuting. He noted that it will provide a modern alternative to road transport and save passengers valuable time.
The project also involved rehabilitating the old metre-gauge railway between Mombasa Island and Miritini, as well as building the new Mombasa MGR Station.
What It Means for Mombasa
The launch of the commuter train marks a big step forward for the coastal city. With reliable rail transport, Mombasa is set to enjoy improved mobility, less traffic, and a modern commuting experience.
