The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) will be closed on Sunday, November 30, to facilitate the annual World AIDS Day Half Marathon.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, November 25, KeNHA Acting Director General Luka Kimeli confirmed that the road stretch between Nyayo National Stadium Roundabout and Museum Hill Interchange will be closed from 6:00 am to 10:30 am.
“The closure will allow for a 21-kilometer half marathon in commemoration of World AIDS Day 2025. We advise motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed along the route,” said Kimeli.
The marathon, themed “One Race, One Goal: Ending AIDS among Adolescents and Young People,” seeks to highlight Kenya’s commitment to ending AIDS by 2030. The event also aims to raise awareness on HIV prevention, reduce new infections among youth aged 15-24, promote treatment adherence, and address social issues such as teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence.
Apart from the 21 km Half Marathon, participants can also join a variety of other races, including a family fun run, kids’ race, wheelchair race, corporate race, and CEOs race. Interested participants can register online via the National Syndemic Diseases Control Council (NSDCC) website.
World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, commemorates those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, supports those living with the disease, and celebrates progress made in treatment and prevention.
KeNHA has urged the public to plan their travel accordingly to avoid traffic congestion and cooperate with traffic officials for a smooth experience during the event.
