A mother and her children are undergoing treatment at Matuu Level Four Hospital following a disturbing hit-and-run accident that occurred at Kikumini Market along the busy Kanyonyo–Embu Road in Makueni County.
The victims were reportedly crossing the road when they were struck by a speeding double-cabin vehicle. Eyewitnesses at the scene recounted the horrifying moment the vehicle hit the family, sending them sprawling to the ground before the driver sped away without offering any assistance or stopping to assess the damage caused.
The mother and her two children, whose names have not been released, were quickly attended to by bystanders and rushed to Matuu Level Four Hospital, where they are currently admitted. Hospital sources confirmed that the mother sustained multiple fractures and bruises, while the children suffered varying degrees of injuries, with one reportedly in critical condition.
Authorities responded swiftly following reports of the incident. Efforts to trace the fleeing vehicle bore fruit when the suspect vehicle was intercepted at Kivaa Market, several kilometres from the accident site. The white double-cabin pickup, now in police custody, is believed to have visible signs of the collision, including a damaged front bumper and traces of blood.
The vehicle was taken to Kikumini Police Station, where it is being held as part of an ongoing investigation. Police are also working to establish the identity of the driver at the time of the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver may have been speeding and possibly under the influence of alcohol, though this remains unconfirmed pending forensic analysis and a full statement from the suspect, who was not immediately arrested at the time of the vehicle’s interception.
Residents of Kikumini Market expressed outrage and concern over the growing number of road accidents in the area. Many pointed to the lack of speed bumps and pedestrian crossings along the Kanyonyo–Embu Road, which has become notorious for reckless driving and speeding. Community leaders and local residents are calling on the county and national governments to take urgent measures to improve road safety, including installing traffic calming measures and increasing police patrols.
