Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway should prepare for a temporary disruption this weekend, as Moja Expressway has announced a planned closure at the Museum Hill Exit A. The closure will begin on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11:00 PM and last until 5:00 AM on Sunday, May 11.
According to a public notice issued by Moja Expressway, the brief closure is necessary to facilitate construction and maintenance works along the expressway. Drivers are advised to plan alternative routes during the affected hours, with the Haile Selassie Exit recommended as a suitable detour. The company also cautioned motorists to anticipate potential traffic build-ups near the closed section.
This is not the first time Moja Expressway has carried out temporary closures to support ongoing infrastructure improvements. In April 2025, the Mlolongo Toll Station and Syokimau Entrance A—located opposite Dinlas Pharma—were closed overnight to enable the safe continuation of construction work on the Katani pedestrian overpass.
Stretching 27 kilometers from Mlolongo to the James Gichuru junction, the Nairobi Expressway serves as a vital artery for the capital’s transportation network. It was developed under a public-private partnership and is operated by Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
The expressway is a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Kenya and was envisioned to ease Nairobi’s chronic traffic congestion while enhancing travel efficiency. Alongside other mega-projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), it symbolizes the growing China-Kenya infrastructural collaboration aimed at closing the country’s infrastructure gap.
Since its launch, the expressway has played a significant role in reducing travel time across Nairobi, offering an alternative to the often-congested Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way corridors.
While temporary closures may inconvenience some road users, Moja Expressway maintains that such interventions are essential for ensuring road safety and maintaining service quality on this critical transport link.
Motorists are urged to remain patient and follow official advisories to minimize disruption during the scheduled maintenance window.
