Tragedy struck on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as a long-distance Tahmeed bus overturned at the McKinnon area in Kinango, Kwale County. According to initial reports, one passenger has died, while several others sustained injuries.
Photographs from the scene showed the bus lying on its side, with another image showing the vehicle after it had been righted. The exact cause of the accident remains unclear, and authorities are yet to release a full official report.
The Long Distance Drivers and Conductors Association (LoDDCA) confirmed the accident, noting that this marks the second fatal incident involving a Tahmeed bus in just one week.
“Tahmeed Bus was involved in a road accident at the Mackinnon area in Kwale County with several people injured and one feared dead,” LoDDCA stated. “This marks the second fatal accident involving Tahmeed buses within a week.”
Earlier on November 9, another Tahmeed bus crashed at the Nyayo Roundabout in Nairobi, killing the conductor on the spot. Several other passengers sustained injuries to the chest, head, and legs.
Preliminary reports suggest that driver fatigue may have played a role in the most recent crash, with the driver possibly falling asleep while navigating the long-distance journey. However, investigations are ongoing, and authorities are expected to release more details soon.
Incidents like these highlight the risks associated with long-distance bus travel, particularly fatigue-related accidents. Road safety authorities continue to urge transport companies to enforce strict rest periods for drivers and ensure that vehicles meet safety standards to prevent such tragedies.
Passengers traveling on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway are advised to exercise caution, and authorities are intensifying monitoring along major routes to reduce the risk of accidents.
