Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to prepare for major traffic changes on Sunday, August 3, 2025, as the city hosts the opening of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament. Authorities have announced that several key roads will be closed or partially restricted to facilitate smooth movement of teams, officials, and fans, as well as to bolster security around match venues.
According to a detailed traffic advisory, Aerodrome Road will be completely closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout. Lang’ata Road will see partial closure on one side, specifically from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout. Meanwhile, Mombasa Road will also have one side restricted between Lusaka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout.
To manage the expected traffic disruptions, motorists are urged to use alternative routes. For those heading from Mombasa Road to the Central Business District (CBD), the recommended diversions include Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or the Southern Bypass through Ole Sereni.
Drivers traveling along Lang’ata Road toward the CBD should consider using Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout. Those planning to reach Thika, Ruiru, or Juja from the city centre are advised to opt for Limuru Road or Kiambu Road instead of the typically congested Thika Road.
In preparation for the influx of fans expected at Kasarani Stadium, public transport vehicles (matatus) ferrying supporters are instructed to use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, proceed along Ngomongo Road, and connect through Ngomongo Roundabout.
Motorists traveling toward Thika Road are further advised to take the Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road to ease pressure on the main corridor.
The temporary traffic changes are part of a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring safety and efficient mobility during the prestigious continental tournament. With thousands expected to attend the matches and festivities, drivers are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines, leave early, and exercise patience to avoid unnecessary delays. The success of this traffic management plan will be crucial in maintaining order and delivering a smooth experience for all participants and fans during the tournament kickoff.
