The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has arrested a matatu driver who was filmed driving recklessly in a viral video that triggered public outrage. The incident, which circulated widely on social media, highlighted the dangers posed by rogue public service vehicle operators and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety rules.
The viral footage showed the matatu weaving dangerously through traffic while a tout precariously hung on the door, performing acrobatic stunts. The vehicle was seen making sharp turns, sudden accelerations, and abrupt stops, putting both passengers and other road users at great risk. The video quickly sparked anger among Kenyans, many of whom demanded immediate action against those involved.
In a statement, NTSA condemned the stunt as life-threatening, warning that sudden braking, erratic acceleration, or reckless cornering can easily destabilize passengers and result in fatal accidents. The authority emphasized that conductors and passengers must remain seated and use seatbelts at all times while in motion.
NTSA further noted that the case underscores a growing trend of indiscipline among a section of matatu operators. It pledged to intensify surveillance across highways and urban centres to curb similar incidents and restore sanity on Kenyan roads.
The driver was arrested, arraigned in court, and charged with multiple traffic offences. He was released on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh300,000, pending the outcome of the case.
The authority expressed appreciation to members of the public for reporting the incident, urging Kenyans to continue sharing evidence that can help enforce safety standards. NTSA reiterated its commitment to ensuring rogue drivers face strict consequences, stressing that reckless driving not only breaks the law but also endangers lives.
The arrest serves as a stern reminder that flaunting traffic regulations carries serious legal repercussions. NTSA has vowed to sustain a firm crackdown on rogue matatu operators to safeguard the lives of passengers and other road users.
