The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced new measures to curb road accidents during the 2025 festive season, including mandatory re-tests for drivers flagged by the NTSA Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS).
Speaking on Sunday, November 16, Acting NTSA Director General Angela Wanjira revealed that the measures come after a report showed a 2.6% increase in road crash victims compared to 2024. “We are committed to improving road safety ahead of the festive season, which historically records high accident rates,” she said.
Launched in 2023, the IRSMS is a digital monitoring platform that tracks vehicle speed, driver behavior, braking patterns, and route compliance. The system sends real-time alerts for violations such as reckless overtaking and speeding, allowing NTSA to identify drivers who need retraining or corrective action.
According to Wanjira, drivers flagged by IRSMS during the festive season will be subjected to re-testing to confirm their road competency. Those who fail risk losing their licenses, as the authority intensifies efforts to ensure compliance with road safety standards.
In addition, NTSA will expand its Usalama Barabarani programme, focusing on seat belt usage, managing driver fatigue, and promoting responsible road practices. Pre-festive inspection clinics at major bus termini will also be conducted, ensuring that buses are roadworthy before the holiday travel rush.
NTSA will also collaborate closely with the National Police Service to implement multi-agency strategies that focus on accident prevention rather than reaction. This proactive approach aims to enhance compliance with road safety measures across PSVs and commercial fleets, which are now under continuous monitoring via IRSMS.
With these initiatives, NTSA hopes to minimize road accidents during the festive season while ensuring that drivers adhere to strict safety standards.
