The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the closure of Nyali Links Road in Mombasa for a period of six months to address persistent flooding and drainage problems that have long affected the area. The closure will begin on August 1, 2025, and is expected to run until January 30, 2026, with extensive construction works planned to provide a permanent solution to the recurring waterlogging during the rainy season.
The upcoming project will involve elevating the entire road section and installing modern drainage systems to allow for better rainwater flow and reduce the flooding that frequently disrupts transport along this route. The works are designed to ensure the road remains passable during heavy rains, a challenge that has impacted both residents and businesses in Nyali and surrounding areas.

Motorists have been advised to exercise caution near the construction site and to use designated alternative routes as provided in KURA’s traffic plan. Traffic marshals and police officers will be deployed to manage traffic flow and assist drivers during the construction period. Road users have also been urged to adhere strictly to all traffic signs and instructions to minimize disruptions and enhance safety.
The closure is part of a broader strategy to improve urban mobility and infrastructure resilience in Mombasa. Frequent flooding in Nyali and other parts of the city has highlighted the need for long-term interventions that combine effective drainage systems with improved road design.
A flood risk assessment carried out in 2024 identified urban flooding as one of Mombasa County’s major challenges, along with poor waste management and water scarcity. The report emphasized that urban flooding poses a significant risk due to rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage infrastructure. Addressing this challenge requires coordinated efforts from multiple stakeholders, and projects like the Nyali Links Road upgrade are seen as critical steps toward building resilience.
KURA has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the road closure and has assured residents that the project will not only solve the flooding issue but also improve overall road quality and safety.
