A tragic road accident in Mbeere North has left one person dead and two others seriously injured following a collision between a motorcycle and a vehicle belonging to United Democratic Alliance (UDA) parliamentary candidate Leonard Muthende.
The fatal crash occurred along the BAT–Ugweri road when both vehicles reportedly tried to avoid a pothole, leading to a head-on collision. The impact was so intense that the 23-year-old motorcycle rider died on the spot, while his two passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Embu Level 5 Hospital for treatment.
According to witnesses, the young men on the motorcycle were on their way to a football tournament in Siakago when the accident happened. Locals described the scene as chaotic, with residents rushing to rescue the injured before emergency responders arrived.
Family members of the deceased expressed deep grief over the sudden loss. Stephen Macharia, a cousin of the victim, said the family was heartbroken by the untimely death of a promising young man. “We have lost a very young person whose dreams have been tragically cut short. The entire family is in shock,” he said.
The victim’s sister, Victoria Nyakio, also described the death as a devastating blow, calling for justice and a thorough investigation into the incident. “He was full of life and had great ambitions. His passing has left a huge gap in our lives,” she said emotionally.
In a statement, UDA candidate Leonard Muthende expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, sending condolences to the bereaved family and pledging to support them during this difficult time. He condemned attempts by certain individuals to politicise the tragedy, terming such actions as insensitive and opportunistic.
“This is not a time for politics but a moment to unite in grief and support the affected families. My team is fully cooperating with the authorities to ensure justice and clarity in this matter,” he said.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the crash to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding it. The body of the deceased was taken to Gakwegori Funeral Home for post-mortem examination as the community continues to mourn the young life lost in the accident.
