A tragic road accident involving a Dreamline bus has left one person dead and at least 11 others injured after the vehicle overturned on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Makueni County. The crash occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday near Kinyambu market in Kibwezi Sub-county.
According to Kibwezi Sub-county Police Commander Felista Mukunjura, the accident happened when the driver of the Mombasa-bound bus lost control while trying to avoid a tuk-tuk that had unexpectedly entered the road.
“The bus was heading towards Mombasa from Nairobi when it was disrupted by a tuk-tuk, causing it to overturn,” Mukunjura said.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described a chaotic moment as passengers screamed for help while trying to crawl out of the overturned bus. Local residents quickly mobilized to rescue the injured before emergency responders arrived.
Ten of the injured passengers were rushed to Amref-Kibwezi Hospital for treatment, while one critically injured person was transferred to Makindu Hospital for specialized care. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, as authorities work to notify the next of kin.
Police have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether there was any negligence on the part of the bus driver or the tuk-tuk operator.
The incident raises fresh concerns over road safety along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway, which has been a hotspot for accidents involving public service vehicles, private cars, and motorcycles. Authorities have repeatedly urged drivers to exercise caution, particularly at night when visibility is limited and sudden obstacles—like tuk-tuks or stray animals—are harder to detect.
As investigations continue, Dreamline bus company is yet to release an official statement regarding the crash or the condition of the remaining passengers.
Meanwhile, road safety advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better lighting on highways to reduce the growing number of night-time accidents across the country.
