The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a partial closure of the Thika–Garissa (A3) Highway to facilitate essential maintenance works on the Kavenge (Mbakini) Bridge, located near Mbakini Centre. The closure will begin on Saturday, July 26, 2025, and is expected to last until Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The roadworks will focus on rehabilitating the bridge girders and deck key structural components that support the load of the bridge. While not visible to everyday road users, girders play a crucial role in bearing the weight of both the bridge deck and the vehicles that pass over it. These horizontal steel beams span the length of the bridge, and their integrity is essential to the bridge’s overall safety and performance.

The maintenance is necessary to ensure the long-term durability of the bridge and the safety of motorists. Given the scale of the work which includes removing old components, conducting precise structural repairs, and installing new girders the project has been allocated a three-month window to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
Motorists traveling along the affected stretch of the Thika–Garissa Highway should anticipate slower traffic, delays, and possible diversions. To mitigate congestion, KeNHA is developing a traffic management plan. In addition, police officers and traffic marshals will be stationed at the site to guide road users and maintain order during the construction period.
Motorists have been urged to adhere strictly to the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with officers and marshals on duty. These measures are expected to reduce potential traffic snarls and enhance road safety throughout the maintenance period.

This latest closure comes in the wake of similar infrastructure upgrades on other major roads. Just last month, a prolonged disruption was experienced at the Gitaru Interchange, where key road links between Waiyaki Way and the Southern and Western Bypasses were affected. Additionally, a section of Mombasa Road and the Nairobi Expressway near Katani Road was closed between April 19 and July 20 for road improvement works.
KeNHA continues to emphasize the importance of these temporary disruptions in ensuring long-term road safety and infrastructure reliability. Road users are advised to plan their journeys accordingly during the closure period
