The National Police Service has issued a traffic advisory ahead of Sunday’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixture between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Zambia’s Chipolopolo, warning motorists of temporary road closures and diversions across Nairobi.
The advisory, released on Saturday, outlined the affected routes and suggested alternative paths to ease congestion during the high-profile encounter. Authorities emphasized that the changes are aimed at ensuring order, security, and smooth traffic flow on match day.
Roads Affected
Several key routes will be impacted by the temporary closures. Aerodrome Road from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout will remain closed. In addition, one lane of Lang’ata Road between Madaraka and Lusaka roundabouts, as well as one lane of Mombasa Road stretching from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout, will be affected.
Motorists using Mombasa Road towards Nairobi CBD have been advised to divert through Likoni Road–Enterprise Road or alternatively use the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni. Those traveling from Lang’ata Road are directed to Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.
Thika Superhighway and Stadium Access
Police have also warned of traffic disruptions on Thika Superhighway. Motorists are advised to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, the Northern Bypass, or the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route, depending on their final destinations. Vehicles heading to Kasarani Stadium without valid access passes will be required to use the service lanes at Exit 7 or 8.
Security Measures
Extra police officers will be deployed across the affected areas to guide motorists and enforce order. Authorities have cautioned that stern action will be taken against anyone violating traffic regulations during this period. The public is urged to comply with officers’ instructions to ensure safety and avoid unnecessary delays.
Fans Urged to Plan Ahead
With Harambee Stars already through to the quarter-finals and looking to cement their top spot in Group A, the match is expected to draw thousands of fans. Police have therefore urged supporters to plan their travel early, make use of the alternative routes provided, and remain vigilant while accessing the stadium.
The measures, officials noted, are temporary and will be lifted immediately after the conclusion of the match to restore normal traffic flow in the city.
