Nairobi motorists have been urged to brace for temporary traffic disruptions today, Friday, August 22, 2025, as thousands of football fans flock to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024) quarterfinal clash between Kenya and Madagascar.
The National Police Service (NPS) has enforced a series of diversions and road closures across key city routes, with the Thika Superhighway and its access points most affected. The move is aimed at easing congestion as fans travel to Kasarani for the highly anticipated 5 pm kickoff.
Thika Superhighway Diversions
Motorists from Nairobi’s Central Business District heading to Ruiru, Juja, and Thika have been redirected to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4, with a roadblock mounted at Muthaiga. Vehicles using the highway towards Mwiki have been diverted through the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.
For those traveling from Thika, Juja, and Ruiru into the CBD, traffic has been redirected through the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, following a roadblock set up at the Ruiru Interchange. Motorists from Githurai heading to the CBD have also been advised to use the Githurai 44–Kiambu Road route.
Fans making their way to Kasarani Stadium have been cautioned that only vehicles with official access passes will be allowed into the main stadium area. Others have been directed to use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
Police Assure Safety and Order
Security agencies have deployed additional police officers along the affected routes and around Kasarani Stadium to manage traffic flow and guarantee safety. Motorists have been urged to follow officers’ directions and remain patient during the period of disruption.
Authorities have also warned that stern action will be taken against traffic offenders and those attempting to flout the directives. The NPS stressed that the measures are temporary and are meant to ensure both smooth movement and the safety of fans attending the match.
With the Harambee Stars aiming for a semifinal spot, excitement is high across Nairobi and beyond. The city is expected to witness increased fan movement throughout the day, making today one of the busiest football occasions in recent memory.
