A 59-year-old Queensland man, identified as Sean Joseph Howland, is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly assaulting a flight attendant during a pre-departure incident at Perth Airport on July 14. The dramatic episode unfolded aboard a flight preparing to depart for Brisbane, leading to the man’s arrest and removal from the aircraft.
According to reports, Howland repeatedly ignored instructions from cabin crew to remain seated as the plane was readying for takeoff. He allegedly attempted to access the onboard toilet during this critical phase of the flight, prompting intervention by a flight attendant. Authorities allege that Howland responded by pushing the crew member, an action that triggered an immediate escalation.
The altercation was reported to the flight captain, who subsequently requested the intervention of the Australian Federal Police (AFP). Officers arrived on the tarmac and arrested Howland, who was reportedly uncooperative during the arrest. A photo released this week shows the accused dressed in business attire, seated in the back of a police van.
Howland has been formally charged with one count of assaulting an airline crew member, a serious offence under Western Australian law that carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. He is scheduled to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The AFP has reiterated its commitment to protecting airline staff and maintaining order on flights. “The AFP has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to the assault or mistreatment of airline staff, and anyone who commits such an offence can be prosecuted,” said AFP Inspector Peter Brindal.
This incident has reignited discussions around passenger conduct and safety protocols during flights. Authorities have reminded the public that all safety instructions issued by flight crew must be followed without exception. Passengers are encouraged to report any disruptive or suspicious activity by contacting Airport Watch at 131 237.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of unruly behaviour in the aviation sector, where safety is paramount and breaches of conduct are met with swift legal action.
