A bus belonging to the Kanash fleet operating in Ongata Rongai was involved in a road accident on Sunday morning after veering off Magadi Road and plunging into a roadside ditch.
According to witnesses, the vehicle was reportedly overlapping before it lost control on a slope, a section described as a frequent accident hotspot. The bus overturned and landed in the ditch, sparking panic among commuters and road users.
Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene and managed to tow the bus from the ditch. However, the recovery process caused major traffic congestion along the busy road, leaving motorists stranded for several hours.
“It’s one of the three Kanash buses. The newest one got into an accident this morning and overturned along Magadi Road. I hope there are no casualties,” a concerned witness shared on social media.
As of the time of reporting, no injuries or fatalities had been officially confirmed. Eyewitnesses, however, claimed that the bus was carrying passengers at the time of the incident. The management of the Kanash fleet is yet to issue a statement clarifying the circumstances of the accident or confirming the safety of those onboard.
The accident rekindled memories of a tragic crash in September last year, when eight people lost their lives after a 32-seater bus plunged into the Mbagathi River at Gataka. That vehicle, operated by Naboka Sacco, was headed to Nairobi from Gataka when the driver lost control and veered off the road. Six people died instantly, while two others succumbed to injuries in hospital.
Authorities have once again raised concerns over road safety along Magadi Road, urging PSV operators and motorists to exercise caution, especially at known accident black spots.
