A tragic road accident on the Kericho–Kisumu Highway has left at least six people feared dead and four others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday night, September 16, 2025, in the Kipsitet area, when a lorry carrying scrap metal lost control and veered off the road.
According to eyewitnesses, the lorry was heading towards Kisumu when it suddenly swerved and rammed into people who were waiting for transport at a nearby bus stage. The heavy vehicle overturned, leaving a scene of devastation with fatalities and severe injuries reported on the spot.
Residents rushed to help the victims, with emergency responders later arriving to ferry the injured to nearby hospitals. The crash caused heavy traffic snarl-ups along the busy highway, as authorities worked through the night to clear the wreckage and restore order.
Rising Road Tragedies
The crash has reignited concern over the rising number of road accidents in the country, particularly on major highways. The Kericho–Kisumu stretch, being a vital transport corridor, has witnessed several deadly incidents in recent years. Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution when using the route, especially heavy commercial drivers handling cargo.
This latest tragedy comes just weeks after a string of fatal road crashes across different parts of the country. In August, at least 25 mourners died when a bus overturned in Kisumu. Another nine people were killed in Naivasha following a collision between a staff bus and a cargo train, while five others lost their lives in a separate crash along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway. Similar tragedies in Kisii and Kajiado claimed several more lives, painting a grim picture of road safety challenges.

Road safety advocates have once again stressed the need for strict enforcement of traffic rules, proper vehicle maintenance, and vigilance among drivers to curb such devastating losses. They emphasize that safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, requiring cooperation from motorists, pedestrians, and enforcement agencies alike.
