Motorists using Thika Road have been advised to brace for partial closures and diversions on Sunday, August 17, 2025, ahead of the CHAN 2024 Group A clash between Kenya’s Harambee Stars and Zambia’s Chipolopolo at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Authorities have announced that specific sections of the superhighway will be restricted to ensure safety and manage the anticipated surge in traffic as thousands of fans head to the stadium. Travelers are urged to plan their journeys early, adhere to the diversions in place, and cooperate with officers on the ground to avoid unnecessary delays.
For motorists heading from Nairobi’s Central Business District towards Thika, Juja, or Ruiru, the recommended routes are the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road at Exit 4. Those traveling towards Mwiki have been directed to use the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route. Fans bound for Kasarani Stadium without official vehicle access passes will only be allowed to use the service lanes at Exit 7 or Exit 8.
The closures are expected to significantly slow traffic on Thika Road, particularly during the hours leading up to the match. With heavy fan turnout anticipated, police officers will be deployed across all affected sections to manage flow and enforce compliance with traffic rules. Motorists have been cautioned against violations, with stern action promised against offenders.
Apart from Thika Road, several other major routes in Nairobi will experience restrictions. Aerodrome Road between Madaraka and Bunyala Roundabout, one lane of Lang’ata Road from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout, and one lane of Mombasa Road from Lusaka to Bunyala Roundabout will all be affected. Drivers from Mombasa Road are advised to consider Likoni Road–Enterprise Road or the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni as alternatives. Those coming from Lang’ata Road can opt for Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road through Mbagathi Roundabout.
With Harambee Stars already securing qualification to the quarter-finals, Sunday’s match will determine whether they finish top of Group A. Fans attending the highly anticipated encounter are reminded that careful planning and strict adherence to the outlined traffic measures will ensure a smoother and safer match-day experience.
