A deadly road accident late Saturday night along the Mai Mahiu–Narok highway has left several people feared dead after an ENA Coach bus collided with multiple vehicles in a pile-up triggered by a runaway trailer.
The tragic incident occurred at around 11:00 p.m. on August 9, 2025, near the notorious Mai Mahiu steep climb section. Preliminary police reports indicate that the ENA Coach bus was on its way from Nairobi to Migori when it was allegedly struck from behind by a trailer whose brakes are believed to have failed.
The force of the impact pushed the bus into the path of other vehicles, sparking a chain reaction involving several personal cars. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with mangled wreckage strewn across the highway and rescue teams working frantically under the cover of darkness.
“We heard a loud bang, and then screams. The bus and several cars were badly damaged. It was terrifying,” said one eyewitness who was travelling in the opposite direction.
Emergency services from Narok and Naivasha responded swiftly, ferrying the injured to nearby hospitals. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of fatalities, but multiple sources at the scene reported that several occupants of the bus and other vehicles lost their lives instantly.
The Mai Mahiu–Narok highway is notorious for its dangerous stretches, especially the steep climbs and sharp bends that have been the scene of numerous accidents over the years. Investigations are underway to determine whether mechanical failure, driver error, or poor road conditions played a role in the latest tragedy.
By Sunday morning, the highway remained partially closed as police and Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials coordinated the removal of wreckage and debris. Traffic police have urged motorists to approach the section with caution and to consider alternative routes until the road is fully reopened.
This accident once again raises concerns over road safety and the need for strict vehicle maintenance checks, particularly for heavy commercial trucks navigating steep terrain.
