The Government of Kenya, through Huduma Kenya and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), has launched Smart Driving Licence biometric services at 15 Huduma Centres across the country.
This move aims to make it easier for motorists to apply for or upgrade to the modern Smart Driving Licence without traveling long distances.
Locations Offering the Service
In Nairobi, the service is available at:
- General Post Office (GPO) Huduma Centre
- Kibra Huduma Centre
Other counties include Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Garissa, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Kakamega, Eldoret, Thika, Kericho, Nakuru, and Kisii.
What is a Smart Driving Licence?
The Smart Driving Licence is a card-based licence with enhanced security. It features:
- A microchip storing biometric and ID data
- A digital photograph
- Signature
- Driver class
- Traffic offence record
It replaces the old red booklet and integrates with NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS). This makes verification easier and safer for law enforcement and other agencies.
How to Apply
- Register or log in to the NTSA TIMS portal using your National ID, KRA PIN, and phone number.
- Select the option to apply for or renew a Smart Driving Licence.
- Pay the processing fee of Sh3,050, covering application, processing, and issuance.
- Book a biometric appointment at a Huduma Centre.
Biometric Appointment
At your appointment, present:
- National ID
- Old driving licence (if upgrading)
- Payment receipt
NTSA officials will capture:
- Fingerprints
