Super Metro has announced the launch of a new route that will connect Kencom in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) to several key destinations including Community, Upperhill, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Ngong Road, Wanyee, Satellite, and Kabiria. The new route is set to begin operations on Monday, May 5, 2025, with matatus available from as early as 6:00 a.m. daily.
Passengers will be able to board and alight at the Kencom Bus Stop, which is located behind the Kencom building near the private parking area. This addition expands Super Metro’s footprint within Nairobi’s transport network and aims to provide commuters with enhanced access to high-traffic locations such as Upperhill and KNH.
The introduction of this new service is part of the company’s efforts to offer more convenient, reliable, and affordable transportation options to its customers. The new route is expected to benefit workers, students, and residents commuting between the city center and the expanding suburban areas of Kabiria and Satellite.
Super Metro has assured passengers of quality service, noting that the company maintains high standards in terms of safety, punctuality, and comfort. The move reflects the company’s broader vision to be a leading player in Nairobi’s increasingly competitive public transport sector.
The expansion comes after a turbulent period for the Sacco, marked by regulatory challenges and temporary suspensions. In March 2025, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) suspended the operator’s license, citing non-compliance with the Public Service Vehicles Regulations of 2014. This development temporarily halted Super Metro’s operations and disrupted commuter services along several routes.
Shortly thereafter, the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) stepped in, overturning the NTSA’s decision and allowing the Sacco to resume services pending a scheduled appeal hearing. The resumption of services was, however, brief. In mid-April, Super Metro was once again instructed to suspend operations for three days to address outstanding compliance issues.
As part of the requirements, the Sacco was ordered to disengage 269 drivers who were found to be unqualified. Additionally, 42 drivers were directed to undergo retesting to ensure they met the required safety and competency standards. Super Metro was also directed to present specific vehicles identified for compliance issues especially related to speed limiters to the Likoni Motor Vehicle Inspection Centre for evaluation and clearance.
Furthermore, 31 more vehicles flagged for various inspection concerns were required to be reevaluated to ensure full compliance with the road safety and operational standards laid out by the NTSA.
Despite these challenges, Super Metro’s return with a new route marks a significant step toward restoring its reputation and reassuring passengers of its commitment to safety and service delivery. The launch also serves as a strategic move to recapture commuter trust and expand its market share in Nairobi’s matatu industry.
As Nairobi continues to grow and urbanize, efficient and safe public transport will be a critical part of the city’s infrastructure. With this new route, Super Metro aims to not only recover from recent setbacks but also reassert its role in shaping the future of public transport in Kenya’s capital.
