A fatal road accident occurred on the Nairobi-Moyale Highway, claiming the life of a private car driver after a collision with a Liban bus. The tragic incident took place on Friday, with the driver of the saloon car dying on the spot due to the impact of the crash.
Several passengers from both the bus and the private vehicle sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for emergency medical attention. Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of injured individuals, but the incident has raised fresh concerns over road safety across the country.
Preliminary reports indicate that the Liban bus was en route from Nairobi when the collision occurred. The exact cause of the accident has not been established, but police have launched investigations to determine what led to the crash.
This accident comes just days after a similar tragedy occurred on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Makindu. On July 27, 2025, one person lost their life and ten others were seriously injured following a collision between a Dreamliner bus and a tuk-tuk. That accident, which happened around midnight, was reportedly caused by the tuk-tuk veering into the path of the oncoming bus. The injured victims were taken to Amref-Kibwezi Hospital, as police and traffic officers managed the scene and directed traffic.
In light of the recent surge in road accidents, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has ramped up efforts to enhance road safety across Kenya. On July 31, 2025, the NTSA introduced new regulations targeting both public and private vehicles.
The rules include mandatory vehicle inspections, updated insurance compliance, and the installation of functional speed governors that transmit real-time data to the NTSA’s central monitoring system. Public service vehicles must now also carry special inspection certification.
NTSA is urging drivers to remain in their lanes, avoid overloading, and ensure all passengers wear seatbelts. The agency has reiterated that common violations such as speeding and drunk driving remain the leading causes of deadly accidents. Through the enforcement of these new rules, the NTSA hopes to reduce the rising number of road fatalities and improve overall transport safety.
