A tragic accident in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, claimed the lives of three people and left eight others injured early Sunday morning, following a crash involving a speeding pickup that rammed into an active police rescue operation.
According to a police report filed at Kinangop Police Station under OB No. 02/15/06/2025, the incident occurred at around 1:20 am near the Chuma area, approximately three kilometers south of the station. Officers from the station and the Traffic Department had responded to an earlier accident involving two motorcycles when the second tragedy struck.
While officers and members of the public were engaged in rescue and recovery efforts, a silver Isuzu D-Max double cabin pickup, registration number KBT 522N, approached the scene at high speed from the Engineer direction heading toward Njabini. The crash killed three people on the spot: Sergeant Dickson Kilonzo, Police Constable Gilbert Makori, and Ben Wakivi—the driver of the speeding Isuzu D-Max.
Eight others sustained various injuries and were rushed to North Kinangop Mission Hospital. Among the injured is Edwin Mungai Kamau, an Assistant Inspector General from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters, who suffered a fractured left leg. Civilians injured in the incident were identified as Lucy Nyambura Wanjiku (20), Peter Macharia Karanja (47), Daniel Kibebo Wainoga (28), and Dominic Waweru (30), with injuries ranging from fractures to general body trauma.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Engineer Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
