Mombasa is set to benefit from renewed international connectivity following an announcement by Governor Abdulswamad Nassir confirming the resumption of Turkish Airlines’ direct flights from Istanbul to Mombasa starting October 26.
The development comes after a meeting between Governor Nassir and Turkish Airlines General Manager Oguzcan Yerli in Mombasa. During the engagement, Yerli expressed his appreciation for the support received in facilitating the return of direct air services between the two cities.
“I am pleased to confirm that these flights will resume on October 26 a major win for our tourism and logistics sectors,” Governor Nassir stated. “Mombasa is open to the world, and we remain committed to building global connectivity that brings opportunities closer to our people.”
The resumption of this key route is expected to boost Mombasa’s tourism sector, which is heavily reliant on international visitors. Additionally, it strengthens the port city’s position as a logistics hub on the East African coast.
Turkish Airlines, the national carrier of Turkey, is globally renowned for its extensive network. As of June 2024, it operates scheduled services to 352 destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, making it the airline that serves the most non-stop destinations from a single airport. It flies to 131 countries, more than any other airline globally.
The carrier’s main base is Istanbul Airport in Arnavutköy, with its corporate headquarters located at the former Atatürk Airport grounds in Istanbul. Turkish Airlines is also a member of the Star Alliance network, having joined in April 2008.
Founded in 1933 as Turkish State Airlines, the airline initially operated a modest fleet of five aircraft. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the world’s leading carriers, with a strong cargo division Turkish Cargo operating 24 cargo aircraft and serving 82 destinations.
The direct flight between Istanbul and Mombasa will take approximately 7 hours and 15 minutes, covering a distance of 3,221 miles. This renewed link marks a significant step in enhancing bilateral ties between Kenya and Turkey.
