Two people have died and several others were injured following a tragic road accident involving an ENA Coach bus along the Mai Mahiu–Naivasha highway. The incident, which occurred on the notorious accident-prone stretch, saw swift response from St. John Ambulance teams, police, and members of the public, who rushed the injured to nearby hospitals.
According to ENA Coach management, most of the injured passengers have since been treated, cleared, and discharged. In a statement, ENA Coach CEO Richard Mogire expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families, assuring full cooperation with ongoing investigations.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this tragedy,” Mogire said. “We extend our deepest condolences and stand with you in this time of grief. To those injured, we offer our sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery. We are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities as investigations and next steps unfold. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to passenger safety and exemplary service.”
This latest crash highlights the persistent dangers of the Mai Mahiu corridor, a section of road many Kenyans grimly refer to as a “tarmac graveyard.” Its steep inclines, sharp curves, and limited road signage have contributed to numerous fatal accidents over the years. Mechanical failures such as tyre bursts or brake malfunctions often leave drivers with little time to react, resulting in severe collisions.
The region’s deadly reputation is backed by a troubling history. In December 2024, a tyre blowout involving another ENA Coach bus caused a chain-reaction crash that claimed seven lives and left many others injured. In August 2023, a separate incident saw a bus catch fire after a punctured wheel overheated. In that case, all 48 passengers escaped unharmed thanks to quick evacuation and a rapid deployment of a rescue bus.
Authorities have once again urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating the Mai Mahiu route, stressing the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits. As investigations into the latest crash continue, families of the victims are left grieving, and the nation is reminded of the urgent need to make Kenya’s roads safer for all.
