The Kenya National Highways Authority has announced a two-month traffic disruption along a section of the Thika Superhighway to facilitate construction works at Kihunguro. The temporary closure, which will affect both Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes, is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 20, 2025, and continue until Saturday, December 20, 2025.
The disruption is part of ongoing works to construct the Kihunguro footbridge, a project aimed at improving pedestrian safety along the busy corridor. The footbridge will serve thousands of residents and road users who cross the highway daily, addressing long-standing safety concerns in the area.
According to the authority, the works will involve the construction of column bases and stub columns, which will form the structural foundation of the upcoming footbridge. During this period, motorists and pedestrians have been advised to exercise caution and follow the directions of traffic marshals and police officers who will be deployed to the site to manage movement.
A traffic management plan has been prepared to guide vehicle flow during the construction period. For motorists heading towards Nairobi, traffic approaching Kihunguro will be diverted from the affected service lane before the construction site. Vehicles will temporarily merge onto the main Thika Superhighway carriageway to bypass the work area before rejoining the service lane after the construction point. Directional signage and safety barriers have been installed to ensure smooth transitions and maintain order.
Similarly, vehicles travelling towards Thika will be rerouted off the service lane into a temporary bypass route that reconnects to the service lane past the construction section. This diversion begins slightly before the designated work zone, where signage and traffic marshals will assist in guiding movement and managing merging traffic.
The construction area will be fenced off to provide a secure environment for workers and prevent pedestrian movement close to the site. Alternative pedestrian crossing points will be provided further along the highway to maintain safety and minimize disruption.
KeNHA has urged all motorists to remain patient and adhere to the instructions provided, emphasizing that the project is an essential investment in improving safety and accessibility along one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors. The authority expressed confidence that upon completion, the Kihunguro footbridge will significantly enhance pedestrian mobility and reduce the risk of accidents.
