At least 30 passengers were injured on Tuesday evening after a bus was involved in a tragic accident at Waruku, along the road leading to Gatina in Dagoretti North Constituency, Nairobi.
Emergency response teams from nearby hospitals, including county ambulances and Red Cross volunteers, rushed to the scene to assist the injured. The bus reportedly plunged into a river, leaving several victims trapped as rescuers and bystanders worked frantically to pull them to safety.
Dagoretti North Member of Parliament Beatrice Elachi confirmed the ongoing rescue operations and called for calm among residents.
“I’m deeply saddened by the unfortunate accident that occurred this evening at Waruku. The hardworking parents left home this morning to seek their families’ daily bread but, sadly, will not get home,” Elachi said in a Facebook post.
She expressed sympathy to the affected families and commended emergency responders for their swift intervention. “As a community, let us come together to comfort and support the families affected by this tragedy. As your area MP, Tuko pamoja,” she added.
Nairobi City County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, who visited the scene, described the incident as heartbreaking and urged drivers to prioritize road safety. “Let us avoid speeding and reckless driving to prevent such tragedies. Every life matters,” he stated on X (formerly Twitter).
Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai also appealed to the Kenya Red Cross Society and St. John Ambulance to provide further assistance, noting that many passengers were trapped inside the bus.
Police have since launched investigations to determine the cause of the accident as rescue and recovery efforts continued late into the night. Authorities have also urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, especially on slippery and narrow roads, to avert similar tragedies.
