A tragic road accident along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway claimed the life of a young woman and left a motorcyclist nursing injuries on Saturday night.
According to police reports, the accident occurred at about 9:30 pm near the Cloud 9 area along Mombasa Road. A 27-year-old woman, who was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle, died on the spot when an unidentified vehicle rammed into the motorbike from behind. The rider, identified as 29-year-old Raphael Ancheo, sustained soft tissue injuries and was rushed to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River, where he is receiving treatment.
Authorities revealed that both the vehicle and the motorcycle were headed towards Nairobi when the crash happened. The impact threw both the rider and his passenger off the bike. Unfortunately, the pillion passenger, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered severe head injuries that proved fatal. Investigators also noted that neither the rider nor his passenger had reflective jackets at the time of the accident.
The woman’s body was taken to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the motorcycle was towed to Mavoko Police Station for inspection. Police have since launched a manhunt for the vehicle that fled the scene, describing the incident as a hit-and-run. Investigations are ongoing to establish the identity of the driver and the exact circumstances leading to the crash.
This incident highlights persistent road safety challenges on major highways, where motorcyclists and pillion passengers often face heightened risks due to inadequate protective gear, reckless driving, and limited visibility at night. Authorities continue to urge motorcyclists and passengers to wear helmets and reflective jackets to reduce the chances of severe injuries or fatalities in case of accidents.
In a separate incident within Machakos County, two men were arrested on Sunday morning in connection with a violent assault at Bondeni village, Athi River South Sub-County. The assault, reported around 5:05 am, left one man critically injured. Police officers and detectives responded swiftly to the scene, and the victim was rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The suspects are being held at Athi River Police Station as investigations continue.
Both incidents underscore the importance of safety, vigilance, and strict enforcement of laws to protect lives on the roads and within communities.
