Kenyans have been urged to prepare for an eventful week of mixed weather conditions, following a comprehensive forecast released by the Kenya Meteorological Department. The outlook highlights a combination of widespread rainfall, strong winds, scorching daytime temperatures in some areas, and chilly nights in others.
According to the Department, rainfall is expected to affect multiple regions, including the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, Coast, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands, and Northwestern Kenya. While the rains are expected to offer much-needed relief to farmers in these regions, the public is cautioned against possible localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, residents in the northeastern and northwestern parts of the country should brace for intense daytime heat, with temperatures projected to soar above 30°C. These high temperatures may affect water availability and crop yields in the already arid regions.
Conversely, chilly nights are expected to grip parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas surrounding Mt. Kilimanjaro. The department has indicated that nighttime temperatures in these zones could dip below 10°C, potentially increasing the risk of cold-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly.
Adding to the weather variability, a strong wind advisory has also been issued. “Southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s) are expected over the Coast and Kenya’s territorial waters, southeastern lowlands, northeastern and northwestern Kenya,” the advisory noted. These winds could disrupt maritime activities and increase the risk of structural damage in poorly sheltered areas.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has emphasized the importance of staying updated with daily forecasts and urged the public to remain vigilant to any sudden changes in weather conditions. Citizens are also encouraged to take the necessary precautions, whether it is preparing for rain, shielding against the heat, or dressing warmly during chilly nights.
With the country facing such diverse weather conditions, Kenyans are advised to plan their activities accordingly and prioritize safety during this unpredictable weather spell.
