Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has forecasted rains for parts of Central and Western Kenya this week, while most other regions continue to experience dry and sunny weather.
In its weekly weather advisory released on Monday, November 24, Kenya Met indicated that moderate rains are expected in counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia. Other areas likely to receive showers include Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
The Central Highlands are also set to experience light showers affecting Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties. According to the department, the rains are expected to start in the morning, followed by sunny intervals, and a second series of showers in the evening.
While November and December have traditionally marked the short rains season, usually beginning in late September, this year’s rains are arriving later, with most parts of the country still under prolonged sunny conditions.
Temperature Advisory
Alongside the rainfall forecast, Kenya Met has warned of very cold nights in several regions, including the Central Highlands, North and Central Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro. Temperatures are expected to drop below 10°C in counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia.
On the other hand, daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are projected in the Coast, North-eastern, North-western Kenya, parts of the South-eastern Lowlands, Rift Valley, and some Western Kenya counties.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to prepare for intermittent rains and significant temperature fluctuations over the coming week.
