Kenyans have been urged to brace for continued cold nights and rainy conditions in many parts of the country, according to a weather forecast issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department on Monday.
The latest advisory indicates that several regions including the Central Highlands Nairobi included the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and parts of North-western Kenya will experience ongoing rainfall. These rains are expected to vary in intensity, ranging from light showers to heavy downpours, with isolated storms anticipated in some areas.
In addition to the rainfall, the Met Department warns of persistent cold and cloudy conditions, particularly over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and sections of the Central Rift. Nighttime temperatures in these areas are expected to dip below 10°C, especially in Nairobi, the Central Highlands, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Residents in the affected regions are being encouraged to prepare for the chilly weather. The department also noted that daytime temperatures in North-eastern and North-western Kenya will remain high, often exceeding 30°C. These areas are likely to experience hot and drier conditions despite the rains elsewhere.
Adding to the mix of weather changes, Kenya Met has issued a strong wind advisory. Southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (approximately 12.86 meters per second) are expected to affect coastal regions, Kenya’s territorial waters, the South-eastern lowlands, and parts of North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
To cope with the cold weather, Kenyans are advised to take precautions to stay warm. This includes heating homes safely, wearing warm clothing such as woolen sweaters, trench coats, socks, scarves, and gloves. At night, using extra duvets or blankets is recommended. Warm meals and drinks can also help retain body heat, and staying active during the day is essential to keep warm.
As the weather patterns remain unpredictable, the public is encouraged to stay updated with advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department and take necessary measures to stay safe and healthy.
